Kobee Studio: development fonts and graphics

Use system and Google fonts, repair missing faces, import broader SVGs, trace PNGs and transform standalone graphics in development builds.

Unreleased development workflow: these controls belong to the reviewed 1.5.20 checkout, not the stable 1.4.1 package. Start with the version scope.

Activate a system font

  1. Open Settings → Fonts.
  2. Browse/search the available source list and choose an installed family/face.
  3. Inspect the PCB-vector sample using text representative of your board, including required symbols.
  4. Add the face to Kobee using the available activation action.
  5. Return to the artwork tool, select the activated typeface and verify it at physical size.

Adding a favourite is a picker convenience; it is not the same as installing a missing font. Remove from Kobee removes activation from the application's choices rather than uninstalling the operating system's font.

Install a Google Fonts face

  1. In Settings → Fonts, choose the Google Fonts source and search for the family.
  2. Use the available filters, including the optional likely-math-symbol tag filter, to narrow the list. A tag is a hint rather than a guarantee of every glyph.
  3. Select the family and desired face(s), such as Regular or Italic. Preview the exact face with your sample text.
  4. Choose Install selected Google faces… and wait for completion.
  5. Confirm the face appears among activated fonts, then render a label with it.
  6. Reopen offline to verify that the installed face remains available.

The catalog can be browsed offline. Uncached face previews and installs need network access; cached preview data can be reused. Downloads retain licence information. Keep those licences with a redistributed font/library setup and confirm the licence permits your intended use.

Repair a missing face

If a saved font is marked missing, select it and use Repair missing. For a Google face, repair needs a working network connection when the font is no longer cached. Reopen the artwork and verify the intended face after repair.

Do not choose an unrelated font merely to make an error disappear if a project's exact typography matters. Changing the face can alter geometry and label bounds. Preserve a backup and compare before/after output.

Broader SVG import

The development importer handles common path/shape geometry, nested transforms, fills, strokes and supported fill rules. It still rejects unsupported or unsafe constructs, including scripts, external images, filters, masks, live SVG text and embedded raster data.

In Settings → Uploads, choose scope and asset type, then Upload SVG…. Inspect the asset preview before placing. Convert live text and unsupported effects to geometry in the design program if necessary. A file that opens in a browser can still contain unsupported PCB constructs.

For source files used across versions, the strict stable SVG profile is a useful compatibility target.

Convert a PNG to geometry

  1. Open Settings → Uploads, choose the relevant scope/type and use Convert PNG….
  2. Select a clean source image with enough contrast and useful resolution.
  3. Adjust threshold to decide which image values become filled material.
  4. Use inversion if the intended foreground is reversed, and adjust alpha cutoff for transparent input.
  5. Crop to the useful region. Tune smoothing and despeckle to reduce noise without erasing important holes or fine features.
  6. Set physical width and inspect the generated preview at the intended PCB size.
  7. Save the trace as a library asset, then place a test graphic.

To revise a trace, select the saved asset and choose Edit PNG trace…. The workflow updates that asset rather than intentionally creating a new duplicate. Recheck already-placed artwork separately; changing a library record is not a promise to redraw all board instances.

A photograph or anti-aliased logo may produce excessive polygons or fragile detail. Simplify the source or use an original vector file when available. Trace quality must be judged as board geometry, not only as a large image preview.

Place and transform an imported graphic

Open Graphics → Imported Graphic, select the desired library asset and set physical dimensions. Use the preview's four corner resize handles, rotation handle and body dragging where provided. Use aspect lock when you need proportional resizing; check width and height after rotating or mirroring.

Select the output layers, inspect the result, then place. Reopen the generated footprint to update it and confirm the intended position/identity is retained. Repeat orientation checks for bottom output in 3D and GerbView.

Imported geometry can remain visible from embedded artwork data if a library record later changes, but keep originals and backups for reliable future editing. Stable 1.4.1 has stricter regeneration dependencies and should not be assumed to have every development fallback.

Backup and handover

Development backups include activated/downloaded fonts, SVGs, component presets and other expanded personal data. Keep project-scoped assets and original PNG/SVG sources with the board as well. Test the receiving machine's ability to regenerate one representative custom graphic and one custom-font label before using the setup for release work.
