Kobee Studio and KiBuzzard

A practical KiBuzzard alternative comparison: shared origins, PCB label workflows, Kobee Studio's broader tools and what to check before switching.

Kobee Studio began as a fork of KiBuzzard, by Greg Davill, which adapted SparkFun's Buzzard idea for KiCad. The shared starting point is useful: turn text into a readable board marking without drawing each letter by hand.

Kobee Studio is a KiBuzzard alternative for people who want that label workflow alongside a broader set of PCB graphics tools. You may already have everything you need if KiBuzzard fits the labels you make. This page explains the differences that matter in a board-design session, rather than giving either project a score.

What is shared?

Both projects work inside KiCad and generate label geometry. KiBuzzard's upstream guide describes multiple fonts, inverted backgrounds and adding extra TrueType fonts. Those ideas are part of Kobee Studio's heritage, not features it invented.

Kobee Studio retains upstream acknowledgements and licence notices. Thank you to Greg Davill, SparkFun, and the other projects that made the starting point possible.

Which workflow are you looking for?

  • Make text labels in different fonts or with an inverted background — KiBuzzard documents this workflow; Kobee Studio also supports it.
  • Make a symbol-and-text label or maintain project-specific SVG symbols — Kobee Studio's symbols and libraries guide.
  • Label a connector pin by pin with a plug opening and orientation controls — Header overlays in stable 1.4.1; other pitches are part of 1.5.x development.
  • Frame LEDs, switches or repeated components — Component callouts and arrays.
  • Add a documentation QR code or Code 128 asset marking — Codes, with physical sizing and scan checks.
  • Reuse a consistent look across artwork — Saved profiles and backups.
  • Browse/install fonts, trace a PNG or transform standalone imported graphics — The 1.5.x development tools, rather than the current stable download.
  • Style board designators or use project-variable templates — Development board tools and Project Data.

This table explains Kobee Studio's documented workflows. It is not an exhaustive audit of every KiBuzzard revision, fork or extension.

Stable and development are different

As checked on 5 November 2026, Kobee Studio 1.4.1 is the public stable release. The reviewed 1.5.20 checkout is a development/testing candidate. Features described in the development guides are not a promise that the official catalogue already supplies that build.

Kobee Studio targets KiCad 10 through its IPC plugin API. Its stable macOS and Windows workflows are documented; Linux still needs full validation. Check KiBuzzard's own current release/package information for your KiCad version. The older compatibility examples in its README are not proof that it does or does not work on a newer version.

When staying with KiBuzzard makes sense

If you already have a dependable setup and mostly need text labels, there is no obligation to change it. Keep using the tool that fits your boards. A longer feature list is not useful if those extra tools do not solve a problem you have.

Try Kobee Studio when you keep making connector legends, component labels or other board graphics by hand and would like those tasks in the same workspace. Start with one real task, not a wholesale conversion of a finished project.

Try it on a copy of a board

  1. Save a copy and keep the original installation/data available.
  2. Install Kobee Studio from KiCad's official repository through Plugin and Content Manager. Check the offered version and apply pending changes. Alternative install routes remain available.
  3. Make one ordinary label, place it, save the board and reopen the artwork.
  4. Try the additional tool you actually need, such as a header legend.
  5. Compare physical size, placement, bottom-side orientation and exported Gerbers.

Kobee Studio includes compatibility handling for legacy label data, but this is not a blanket guarantee that every old KiBuzzard label can be regenerated unchanged. Keep the originals and test representative labels, fonts and end treatments before relying on a migration. Existing geometry and successfully reopening its generator settings are separate checks.

Licensing and sources

KiBuzzard is MIT-licensed. Kobee Studio is GPL-2.0-only, with retained third-party notices. Review the relevant licences if you redistribute either plugin or its bundled material.
